Results scaling study crickets Nigeria

During last 6 months we investigated the potential for scaling up the cricket business in Nigeria for use in nutrient-enriched bread as a sustainable, locally produced protein source (see news item of April 10th). The study resulted in the following positive results:

  1. Cricket-enriched bread can contribute to reducing micronutrient deficiencies (protein, iron, vitamin B12) in vulnerable groups while improving local livelihoods. In the target region Akure/Ibadan, scaling up cricket production could reach thousands of households within three years, supplying both household consumption and small[1]scale retail markets. The product is designed to be affordable and familiar in taste and texture, increasing its potential for acceptance;
  2. The Akure/Ibadan region offers optimal farming conditions—average temperatures around 30 °C allow for a four-week growth cycle without heating or insulation of the farm. Demonstration farms and trained farmers already exist, creating a strong production base. Low[1]cost housing and locally sourced feed make the model scalable;
  3. Bread formulations with 3–10% cricket flour were agreed for pilot testing, meeting nutritional and sensory requirements. No technical barriers were identified that would prevent moving to prototyping;
  4. Preliminary economic analysis shows competitive production potential if local feed sources and cooperative processing models are used. Bread can be produced at a price point comparable to premium fortified breads in Nigeria. Consumer acceptance strategies (neutral labelling, “nutrient-enriched” positioning) will be critical to achieving market penetration.

These results formed a solid basis to proceed with the next steps; conducting a pilot on establishing a medium sized cricket farm to secure required volumes, implement quality assurance, finalize the product development of cricket bread and organize the supply chain. This will be performed by Springboard, TNO and NGN (lead organization). The RVO (Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs) requested a proposal for further funding this impactful trajectory.
